Pac-man- Gameplay and Its Multiple Versions:
The arcade game was so popular.
The arcade game was so popular it acted as a social marvel, in every corner of the world - all gamers knew its name. Its fame was like an epidemic spreading like fire so fiercely, the phenomena was called Pac-man fever. It has been modified and given many new versions by different developers as well. There have been animated T.V. shows based on Pac-Man. With Google doodle version being the highest played version, Pac-man is a brand ambassador of video games with a lot of industries even using it as a mascot.
Game Play - Let’s first understand the gaming instructions given below:
The game revolves around the Pacman.
The game revolves around the Pacman who has to cross the maze which has several Pac-dots. These Pac-dots are extremely delicious and Pacman wants to eat them all. But, now comes the part of the villains, Pacman has 4 colored ghosts to fight against- Blinky, Clyde, Inky, and Pinky who wouldn’t let Pac-man have its way. These ghosts are coming after Pac-man and in just one touch - Game over. However, these ghosts have a predictable pattern. The red ghosts will run after Pac-man while the pink ghosts simply block the way, the blue ghost has an inconsistent way of dealing with Pacman, i.e., sometimes it chases Pacman away and sometimes it runs away. The last but not the least and also the most unpredictable is the Orange ghost that has a random way of chasing Pac-man.
Versions and Sequels of Pacman:
This is the classic version of Pacman that was Developed by Toruu. Many versions have been developed, some even recently in 2011, which have different instructions or style of gaming. Given below are the versions that were recognized and were loved by all:
1. Baby Pacman
Remember the hype and cry of Pinball. Every 90’s kid has enjoyed Pinball wholeheartedly. The game of pushing a ball through various obstacles to reach its final destination through weird routes and instruments lying everywhere, this game like Pac-man did earn a lot of recognition and fame. Baby Pacman was developed by Bally Midway who became very innovative with Pacman. He only designed a structure very close to Pinball, yet different in the way it is played. The main element of the game is - Missing Power Pellets. With Baby Pac surrounded by enemies, Pac-man has to fight through the ghosts and using these power pellets reach its destination. Here enters Pinball-Pacman combination. The baby Pac has to use the escape routes such that it unlocks pellets by playing the pinball game. Sadly enough, even this game couldn’t move the hearts to the audience and had easily been replaced by other games such as strategy games online at Manti Games. Click here for more
2. Pacman Plus
A new look, faster-running and attacking ghosts
Midway with its own half-hearted efforts into bringing something new created this version called Pacman Plus just to Introduce Super Pacman, which had nothing supreme about it. The game had nothing more to offer than just a new look, faster-running and attacking ghosts and better background colors and themes. No one had batted an eye for the game as Ms. Pac-man was already doing a thousand times better in the market than Pacman plus could ever have. Midway who was trying so hard to win over the market had failed, succumbing to its eternal rival Namco.
3. Super Pacman
Perhaps the original sequel of the Pacman was Super Pacman as it was carried forward version of Namco. Other than eating Pac-dots, now the Pac-man could ingest a key that would unlock super mode in Pac-man enabling him to fly across all the enemies. There were fruits also available for Pac-man to eat. But did all this even put an impact? The answer is a big NO. All efforts and even the idea was vague and didn’t bring about much approval from the audience. However, being published by Namco had its perks, as this game did create excitement in gamers for few weeks of the launch. This excitement with playing over and over again had died. But overall it was a disappointing attempt by Namco to establish a better version than the classic.
4. Ms. Pac-man
Simplicity wins hearts over pretentious efforts
It is true to say, simplicity wins hearts over pretentious efforts. After Toruu, Namco developed a better version perhaps in terms of having a better-inbuilt software and structure as compared to the original version. Not only was Pacman given a new look with a bow and a mole, but many new levels were added, a groovy music track and different colored themes. There are more intermissions and Clyde was also renamed - Sue. Weirdly, everything seemed fresh and new despite minor changes. And now comes the most surprising fact about this version- it still is the best and most well-recognized Pacman version till date. With the popularity of this game, it’s not wrong to believe in the phrase- “old is gold.”
