The name can be an english translation in the Gaelic "An Ob", meaning 'Little bay' as well as the town is currently also referred to as the Gateway for the Isles. A prominent feature of this west cost jewel is McCaig's Tower which originally had begun construction in 1897 but still existed unfinished following the death of the Visionary Jon S. McCaig. These days the walls of "the Folly" surround a Public Garden and afford breathtaking views of the Town and surrounding Islands. Another building of note could be St. Columba's cathedral that's positioned on Corran Esplanade, constructed in Pink Granite and design is neo-gothic in style. An insight into centuries of Scottish history is to be gained using a visit for the local Castles of Dunstaffnage and Dunollie. Of course no day at Scotland can be complete without having a holiday to a Whiskey Distillery, Scotland's primary export, and Oban is privileged to possess its very own inside very center with the town. An interesting find, relating for the neo-lithic period was found when workers expanding the distillery building into the cliff face uncovered a cave which contained Human remains and implements dated to about 4500 BC.
